Well if the title isn’t a mouthful enough, the food that comes out of one of these babies sure will be!
In my last post, I talked about the Primo Grills and Smokers that run on lump charcoal, and told you how awesome they are. Well, they are not the only cool kids on the block! Louisiana Grills is an American company that has a line of Electric Smoker Grills. These things are super neat – everything on them is digital, and since there is absolutely no flame to deal with, you can throw your food on the grill and head to the beach for a few hours, come back and dinner is ready! And from the little TG-300 Tailgater up to the monster WH-2400 Super Hog, there is BBQ to fit all your needs!
There is an igniter in the bottom of the unit that when activated, lights the wood pellets. A small fan blows air across the pellets, blowing the smoke throughout the body of the BBQ. The electric auger automatically feeds pellets into the tray, allowing you to enjoy a lazy afternoon, or multi-task in the kitchen to finish prepping the rest of the meal. You can decide how much smoke flavour you want by how much pellets you put into the auger, and because the unit is sealed, you can let any unused pellets sit in the auger and tray until the next round of BBQ.
The Louisiana’s are horizontal cylinders, allowing for excellent use of grill space and enabling the smoke to move through the entire BBQ. They have little vent holes along the back instead of a chimney like you will see on many other electric and gas smokers. The reason for this is that a chimney forms a vacuum inside the chamber, concentrating all the smoke at the same end as the chimney. This is obviously not ideal if you’re trying to evenly smoke whatever is on the grill. The cylindrical design of these smokers enables the smoke to linger around the grill, allowing it to penetrate the food to the maximum potential. The other nice thing about the design is that you get a large cooking surface on one main level, unlike in vertical smokers where you have multiple levels of cooking surfaces. This again allows for even penetration of the smoke, as well as even heat distribution. Vertical smokers when used to their maximum capacity can have cool spots because the heat is unable to reach higher levels in the smoker due to food nearer the heat source absorbing the heat first.
Another neat feature in the design of these smoker grills is that they operate on indirect, convective heat. This means there is no need for a rotisserie as the domed shape allows the heat to evenly surround the food. This also means no flare-ups and therefore no burnt food. There is also a little drip can attached to the under-side of the BBQ to catch all the grease, allowing you super easy clean up no matter what you’ve cooked. You end up with incredibly juicy and flavour-packed food. AND it means that once you’re done grilling or smoking your food, you can use it as an oven to bake your dinner rolls, or dessert!
But what about the smoke affecting the flavour of the rolls or dessert, you ask? Well, the Louisiana smoker grills can operate without the wood pellets, so you just allow the pellets to finish burning off, and then you’ve got a minimum of 350 sq inches of baking racks at your disposal.
And why do I keep referring to it as a smoker grill? Because it is! The Louisiana line can run as low as 180 degrees Fahrenheit up to 500 degrees plus for grilling steaks, chicken, chops or whatever! And since each one comes with a stock thermometer, there’s no guessing as to what the internal temperature of the unit is.
The last thing I want to mention is that these things are built to last. They are 14 gauge steel coated with 1000 degree Fahrenheit powder coating to ensure your finish lasts. They also come with adjustable feet to allow you to level the BBQ wherever you place it, and heavy duty wheels to move it around any time you want. The handle is seriously heavy-duty as well, and can be used to both open the lid and as a leverage point when you’re wheeling the BBQ around. Finally the grills are porcelain coated to allow easier clean up and truer flavour every time you cook.
